When I think about wellness, I often return to the power of music. Music reaches us in ways that words sometimes cannot. Music soothes, inspires, and heals. For me, classical music, especially when performed live by a symphony, carries an energy that feels both grounding and uplifting.
During my time of academic research and volunteering at The Cleveland Orchestra, I saw how music could transform lives. Part of my focus was bringing symphony experiences to children of lesser means, many of whom had never stepped inside a concert hall. Watching their faces light up when the first notes filled the air reminded me that music is not a luxury. Every child should have the opportunity to experience it.
The benefits of classical music reach far beyond enjoyment. Exposure helps children develop concentration, discipline, and creativity. Music introduces them to teamwork and harmony while sparking imagination. Music also has a direct impact on mental health. Classical music can reduce anxiety, improve mood, and give children a healthy outlet for emotions they may not have words for. The calm and focus that music brings is a powerful tool for well-being and offers a child a safe outlet for expression and emotion.
Symphonies should never be reserved only for those who can afford a ticket. Community programs, school partnerships, and nonprofit outreach can make this gift available to all children. My experience at The Cleveland Orchestra showed me the ripple effect of bringing music into a child’s life is immeasurable. My goal then, as it remains today, was to break barriers so that all may access symphony music.
As readers, I encourage you to think about how you can support the arts in your own community. Funding for classical music remains essential, especially for programs that reach a broader audience and provide access to children who may not otherwise have these experiences. Supporting these efforts ensures that future generations can enjoy the wellness and joy that music brings.
When doors of symphonies open to every child, we are not only nurturing future musicians, we are supporting their wellness, growth, and capacity for joy. That, to me, is the true measure of music’s power.
