Wellness Writer Debra Gudema on Gratitude

Gifts of Gratitude

Gratitude holds quiet power: a gentle reflection of self-care. This personal gift helps us grow and thrive, especially during challenging times. For me, gratitude started showing up in the smallest of ways. A sip of warm tea on a cool morning. The weight of my cat, Snowflake, curled up by my side. Hearing my children laugh. A call with my mom or mom in law or a nature walk with my husband. All simple moments, but moments I hold with sincere gratitude.

When I truly began to notice these moments, I mean really notice them, they became my anchors. These tiny sparks of light, particularly during heavier times or when I needed a boost of motivation and inspiration, have been key to my wellness.

Gratitude does not mean pretending everything is perfect. Far from it. Gratitude encourages us to acknowledge that even in the middle of stress, loss, or uncertainty, it helps keep us in perspective. From a friend who checks in. A stranger who smiles or the simplicity of watching the sunset, each of these moments remind us that, “all is well” in our immediate world.

A few years ago I began keeping a gratitude journal to help keep me in check. In reality, I do not get this every day, but on the days I do, it true helps my overall sense of self and reminds me of the light.

Gratitude, I have found, is a practice, not a mood. You do not have to wait until life feels good to begin. You can start right now and slowly let the practice shift your lens. In time you will start seeing more beauty, more connection, and more meaning. And this practice is always available to you with zero judgment.

So if you are feeling lost or overwhelmed, or just want bouts of gratitude each day, start here: What is one thing you are grateful for right now?

Write it down. Say it out loud. Feel it. Let it root you and guide you.
