Deb Gudema Highlights Her Working Relationship With Rabbi Merle E. Singer

My Most Grateful Role: Deb Gudema on her working relationship with Rabbi Merle E. Singer

Six years have passed since our temple’s Executive Director introduced me to Rabbi Merle E. Singer and his beloved wife, Myra, of blessed memory. What began as a simple meeting in late 2019 became the start of a partnership that continues to guide my days with purpose.

Rabbi and I formed an immediate connection. Our first conversations revealed shared experiences that bridged our generational difference. We spoke openly about adoption, early reading challenges, and the determination required to move through school with learning disabilities. We also discovered that we were equally drawn to Torah study, reflective writing, and a commitment to staying hopeful in our outlook. Those early exchanges shaped the beginning of my role as Rabbi’s assistant, a role grounded in care, the joy of writing, and a special bond.

During the years we worked in person, our meetings filled countless hours with study, storytelling, and thoughtful revision. We explored weekly Torah portions, dusted off sermons written decades earlier to see how they speak to today’s world, and crafted new reflections together. Rabbi’s depth of experience in the rabbinate and the perspective he carries while living with Parkinson’s Disease became guiding threads in much of our work. Many of his insights eventually formed collections of quotes that continue to bring encouragement to his readers. Rabbi’s steady belief in my abilities inspired me to pursue a doctorate in education, strengthening my dedication to learning and writing.

Our collaboration has now shifted into a remote rhythm, yet the closeness of our work remains unchanged. Screens have replaced the table where we once sat together, but our conversations still unfold with the same warmth and intention. We continue to review sermons, shape new pieces, and share moments of joy through music. Rabbi’s ability to sing with striking clarity remains one of the wonders of our time together. Even from a distance, when a song we both love begins to play, we sing, creating moments that feel both grounding and joyful.

Serving as Rabbi Singer’s assistant, whether seated beside him or connecting through a screen, remains one of the greatest honors of my life. I remain deeply grateful to those who entrusted me with this role and for the privilege of walking beside a teacher, mentor, and cherished friend.
