Deb Cleveland Gudema on Classical Music and Wellness

The Wellness Power of Classical Sound

Classical music carries a quiet power that reaches beyond melodies and movement. Some may experience a shift in their body when they hear the violin or the robust sound of the cello. Next time you are at the symphony or listening to classical music, notice how your body changes at certain melodies and instruments, it is truly fascinating.

A major impetus for my advocacy of classical music comes from the way this art form supports health and wellness. A widely cited study from the University of Maryland Medical Center found that classical music eases blood flow thus relaxing the body, and research from Stanford University found that classical compositions help soften anxiety and reduces stress. Both studies stipulate the magical essence of classical music and why this art is important.

In a routine wellness class I have been attending, classical pieces have been playing in the background. While spa music is the traditional sound for yoga, classical music can equally offer blissful results for the mind and body. At home, classical music offers a restful environment when working, studying or cleaning the house. The soft structure of classical music steadies my attention, guiding my awareness toward peacefulness while relishing on memories of my grandparents. I owe a large debt of gratitude to my grandparents for introducing me to the symphony at young age, for I know my love of classical music was birthed in those early years.

I have learned from experience that classical music does more than create sound. Classical music creates a calm space and invigorates my cells in a unique way. While my children eyeroll when Classical FM is blasting in the house, I can also recognize how they embrace the magic it offers. What I also love about classical music is its power to bring people and communities closer. In such a fragile times, the power of music can greatly impact human emotion and human connection.

A Note on Support for Classical Music

Federal funding for classical music radio has ended, which is very upsetting. Classical radio stations and community orchestras are in a more vulnerable position than ever before. Classical music offers comfort, grounding, and emotional care, which makes support for this art even more critical. Local symphonies and classical radio stations depend on donors who believe in the power of music to lift the human spirit and strengthen community connection.

If classical music has brought a moment of steady breath or peace to your day, consider a donation to your local symphony or your local classical radio station. Your gift helps ensure the magic and importance of classical music.
